I didn't know that when I had my anxiety and panic attacks that there was a whole slew of these things. There is OCD which is Obsessive compulsive disorder which is where an example would be someone who has a phobia of germs keeps washing their hands over and over again. These people have continuous thoughts or obsessions and then use comforting rituals to control the anxiety that these thoughts give them but the problem is that the rituals and thoughts end up controlling them.
Another anxiety disorder is PTSD post-traumatic stress disorder. This will start after a person will have a horrible experience that involved some sort of physical harm or injury or the threat of it like a rape, prisoner of war camp experiences, war, robbery and such. It could have happened to the person or someone that they were close to or an incident that the person witnessed happening to another person or persons like violence at a bank robbery. Other such causes could a car wreck, train wreck, bombings or natural disasters. I think alot of us felt some PSTD when 911 hit. Alot of people will relive the incident during the day and in nightmares. They become numb and may lose touch with reality. Not everyone that has had a traumatic experience gets the full PTSD or even a minor version of it.They can develop symptoms several months to up to a year later.
A third one is SAD social anxiety phobia which is one that I struggle with at work where I see the same people every day for two years and I still have this. What it is where people become extremely self conscious in social situations like my example at work or any social really. They have a intense fear of being judged and watched by others and doing things that will make them feel embarrassed. You know that your fears are irrational but you still have a hard time overcoming them. It can be 1 social event like going out to dinner or a major one such as the office Christmas party. Some of the symptoms are nausea, blushing ,sweating and feeling that all eyes are on you only. Some research suggests that it is genetic and it can be accompanied by other anxiety disorders or depression.
GAD is the most common and it is General Anxiety Disorder. It is estimated that about 6 million americans have this and more women than men are affected by it. You go through the day with an exaggerated sense of worry over some issue which could be your health, finances, issues at work, etc. Trouble falling asleep, headaches, muscle tension are some of the symptoms that you may have. Later you could go into panic attacks if you don't get help.
